BAA abandon plans for third runway at Heathrow

Reacting to the news that BAA will not be submitting their application to expand Heathrow with a third runway, Stop Climate Chaos Coalition director Ashok Sinha said,

A new runway at Heathrow would have increased the UK’s carbon emissions. This welcome decision to shelve Heathrow’s expansion plans instead increases our chances of preventing catastrophic climate change. As the Climate Change Committee said today, we now urgently need a step change increase in our effort to deliver a low carbon economy – creating large numbers of new jobs and business opportunities along the way.

Gordon Brown's climate manifesto for Copenhagen

In a manifesto launched today, Prime Minister Gordon Brown has pledged UK leadership in tackling climate change during the run-up to the UN climate summit in Copenhagen this December. Alongside the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Ed Miliband, he has outlined his vision for a new deal where the emissions of developed nations will peak by 2020 (we believe the deal should be no later than 2015) and decline thereafter.

On Wednesday 15th Julyat 6pm, Parliament Square will be filling Parliament Square discussing bills on:
1. 10% reductions in UK Greenhouse gases by the end of 2010
2. A million Green Jobs and emergency insulation program
3. Banning all domestic flights by the end of 2010
4. A 55 mph national speed limit

Coalition urges MSPs to strengthen bill

Stop Climate Chaos Scotland is today [Wednesday 6 May] calling on MSPs from all parties to show their support for a strong Scottish Climate Change Bill, as the Stage 1 Debate gets underway in the Scottish Parliament.

The SCCS coalition is looking for MSPs to deliver a strong Bill by addressing loopholes identified in the Scottish Parliament’s Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change (TICC) Committee Stage 1 Report, published on Friday 24 April.

MSPs put pressure on for strong Climate Bill

On 24 April Stop Climate Chaos Scotland welcomed the strong report from the Scottish Parliament’s Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change Committee on the Scottish Climate Change Bill. The report recommends that the Bill needs tougher targets and broader scope. The Government will now have to respond to the Committee’s report in a debate expected next week.

Government hides carbon emissions with creative accounting

New government figures released today revealing that UK carbon emissions are significantly down are ‘spin, aided by creative accounting’ say the World Development Movement.

The government has announced that UK carbon emissions have fallen by 13 per cent since 1990. But this figure has been manipulated to include carbon credits, and discounts emissions from aviation. A proper analysis of the figures by the World Development Movement reveals that UK carbon emissions have fallen by just 5 per cent since 1990.

'Climate Rush' hit Heathrow Airport on the 12th January. A lovely picnic was enjoyed by all with much singing and merriment. We are all celebrating the news that ministers have finally listened to our chorus of dissent on excluding aviation and shipping from the bill.

Ed Miliband has announced plans to include these emissions sources in the Climate Change Bill targets due to become law in November. During the debate he specifically thanked you (if you took action):

I end by paying tribute not to those in the House, but to those outside it: those who saw the dangers of climate change and the actions that needed to be taken long before the politicians did. I pay tribute to the scientists who detected the problem, the campaigners who fought to bring it to public attention, the green movement that mobilised for change, and above all, the members of the public who wrote to us in record numbers, asking for a Bill that met the scale of the challenge. I believe that we have met that challenge. We owe them a debt of gratitude for making it happen, and I urge all Members to support the Third Reading.

Today’s, report from the influential committee on climate change has recommended that the UK cuts greenhouse gases emissions by at least 80 percent and that this target should include emissions from aviation and shipping. The World Development Movement welcomes this news as a potential ‘reprieve’ for the poorest people in the world.
