SCCS response to Scottish Budget Bill

Stop Climate Chaos Scotland is very disappointed to see that the Scottish Budget, published today, does not make any further funding allocation towards cycling and walking.

Tom Ballantine, Chair of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland said:

“The budget for cycling and walking next year remains a tiny 1.5% of the overall transport budget. We understand funding for that ‘active travel’ is then set to decrease the following year.

“Hundreds of people across Scotland have contacted their MSPs and Mr Swinney directly about this issue over the past few months as part of our We Want to See Double campaign. They have been let down by Mr Swinney ignoring their concerns.”

Transport accounts for a quarter of Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Scottish Government must significantly increase the funding it provides to cycling and walking – the most low carbon forms of transport – to address this.

Stop Climate Chaos Scotland and others continue to call for future budgets to increase levels of funding for active travel year on year until 10% of the total transport budget is allocated to this area.
