Cyclone Phailin hits Indian coast

On Saturday night, 12 October, Cyclone Phailin hit the east coast of India causing wide devastation in the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. MRDF partner READ has a number of projects in some of the affected areas including Ganjam District which bore the brunt of the storm.

Thankfully loss of life was minimised by the swift actions of the government and local authorities who had evacuated 800,000 people to cyclone shelters and public buildings before the cyclone hit. Despite this thousands of people have lost their homes, crops and livelihoods.

READ works to empower tribal and Dalit women, some of the most marginalised people in India, to start their own businesses and claim their rights.

READ’s local staff are currently assessing the impact of the cyclone on their projects in Ganjam, Gajapati and Rayagada Districts, but this is extremely challenging as many areas are without power and communications are limited.

We will post updates as we receive further information from our local partner.
